About Bordelon Law Firm P.L. And John S. Bordelon

The firm was originally founded in 1974 in Lafayette, Louisiana, by attorney John S. Bordelon after he received his Master of Laws advanced law degree from Southern Methodist University. Earning this second law degree in 1973 after studying estate planning and income tax law at the prestigious S.M.U. Dedman School of Law was the genesis of Mr. Bordelon's 45-year career primarily as an estate planner and tax-minded real estate and commercial law practitioner.

Upon becoming Board Certified in 1984 as a legal specialist in Income Tax Law under the Louisiana Bar Association's inaugural certification program for legal specialists, he maintained this certification until 1989 and his tax law focused practice in Lafayette, Louisiana, through 1987.

After being admitted to practice law in Florida in 1986 then moving with his family to Pensacola Beach in 1987, he opened a Florida location for the firm. Eventually settling in Gulf Breeze, Mr. Bordelon became very active in the community and was a founding member and early President of the Gulf Breeze Area Chamber of Commerce as well as a member of the St. Ann's Parish Council.

An Asset To The Gulf Breeze Community

Over the years he has served on numerous professional and civic boards and committees and is widely known for his community activism. As an example of his many civic contributions in 1989 on a 'pro bono' basis, he incorporated the Krewe of Wrecks, Pensacola Beach's first Mardi Gras crew there and the organizer of the now-famed Pensacola Beach Mardi Gras parade.

As he was the first attorney to both live and practice in the then small town of Gulf Breeze, responding to his local clients' wide ranging legal needs became the impetus of his new Florida practice and he quickly evolved from being a legal specialist to a more general practitioner.

Although this was the inverse of how most attorneys' cycle from generalists to specialists, this reverse evolution has given Mr. Bordelon a unique and invaluable perspective that, to this day, enables him to provide his clients practical insight and knowledgeable referrals on a variety of non-tax legal matters. These include personal injury claims, business disputes, commercial litigation, will contests, family law and even bankruptcy and mortgage foreclosure defense.

Public Trust Experience

Meanwhile, he maintained his membership in the Louisiana Bar Association and continued serving as the General Counsel of the Lafayette Public Trust Financing Authority from its creation in 1979 through 2009. His experience with this public trust provided him with comprehensive knowledge of mortgage financing and mortgage backed securitized tax free bond issues. The knowledge and financial insight gained during his 30-year representation of this public trust continue to benefit his clients to this day.

Counteracting Inappropriate 'Family Protection Trusts' And Other Legal Scams

An important area of concern for John S. Bordelon has been counteracting the damage of constant efforts by unscrupulous attorneys to scare people into paying exorbitant fees for unnecessary or inappropriate trust or estate plans. Unfortunately, some lawyers take advantage of the public through so-called free law 'work shops' or 'no obligation' asset protection dinner seminars -- followed by strong sales push to purchase unneeded and even harmful legal products. For those attorneys to scare families by the use of misrepresentations or omissions of all relevant laws into wasting their precious and hard earned financial resources on unnecessary attorneys' fees paid for so-called 'family protection trusts' when just as effective no- or low-cost alternative planning strategies are available is reprehensible. Actively working to protect clients' best interests is a part of the proud tradition of public service by the firm and its founder John S. Bordelon.
